00:01
hi my name is Erica Calloway and I work
00:03
at Studer Education I want to take an
00:05
opportunity to speak with you about a
00:07
key concept that’s foundational to
00:08
building an organizational culture that
00:10
people want to be a part of have you
00:13
ever heard the saying kids don’t learn
00:14
from people they don’t like I love this
00:17
line from Rita Pearson’s TED talk about
00:19
how to engage students and if we stop
00:20
and think about it the same is true for
00:22
adults people don’t work for people they
00:25
don’t like sure they’ll show up they may
00:27
do some things we’re asked to do or
00:29
they’re asked to do they’ll certainly
00:30
collect a paycheck but they’re not going
00:32
to give it their all so what do we do
00:34
how do we get people to put forth their
00:36
best effort well we have to make a
00:38
genuine connection we have to establish
00:40
and make deposits in an emotional bank
00:42
account every time we make an effort to
00:45
connect with someone and have a positive
00:46
interaction we’re making a deposit in
00:49
that person’s emotional bank account the
00:51
deposits that we make not only build
00:53
trust and strengthen relationships with
00:55
the people around us they also move our
00:57
organization forward and just like any
00:59
other bank account
01:00
we need deposits in order to make
01:02
withdrawals at some point there’s gonna
01:04
come a time and a need to have a tough
01:06
conversation or even course-correct if
01:08
we’re only ever making withdrawals
01:10
that’s going to eventually result in
01:12
disengagement and mistrust and we will
01:14
not get anywhere with our teams the best
01:16
way to build an emotional bank account
01:18
is to really engage just be real with
01:21
your people find out what they care
01:22
about and then ask them about the things
01:24
they care about if every interaction we
01:27
have is a formal feedback session the
01:29
deposit that we make in an emotional
01:31
bank account will be depleted and will
01:32
eventually be lost so I challenge you
01:36
celebrate congratulate talk to your
01:38
people about things that matter to them
01:40
and you’ll find that by making deposits
01:41
in the emotional bank account you will
01:44
move your people forward you’ll move the
01:46
team forward and ultimately the
01:48
organization will move forward
