hi everyone I can’t tell you how happy I
00:04
am to be with you today I’m Joann Stern
00:06
Key senior leader and coach with studen
00:09
and today I’m talking with you about a
00:12
topic near and dear to my heart change
00:14
management or maybe to be clear change
00:17
leadership and it begins with a real
00:20
understanding about change and what it
00:22
is but it also begins with what your
00:24
idea is about what it means to be a
00:26
manager versus a leader so let me start
00:29
with a brief story when I became the CEO
00:32
and leader of my organization there is
00:34
only one word I could use to describe me
00:37
reactive I didn’t really have a plan and
00:40
so what I did was what I call flail at
00:43
leadership I did whatever was most
00:45
pressing and I can tell you I wasn’t
00:47
very proactive and I wasn’t very
00:49
strategic change was something that
00:51
impacted me solely because in many ways
00:54
I’m sad to say it got in my way I wasn’t
00:57
harnessing it and I certainly wasn’t
00:59
capitalizing on it as a leader for my
01:02
organization so let’s talk about those
01:04
two ideas change management versus
01:07
change leadership and to me it all
01:09
starts with your attitude about change a
01:11
person that manages change is someone
01:14
who has to deal with it it’s just
01:17
something that they have to get through
01:19
and that predominates how they work with
01:22
their employees as they work with change
01:24
a change leader views change very very
01:28
differently it’s not something they just
01:30
have to get through it’s something that
01:33
they harness it’s something that they
01:35
want to have happen because that change
01:37
allows them to call on the power of
01:39
their people and the energy that the
01:41
change brings and it fuels us as leaders
01:43
to do the right thing for our
01:45
organizations now we all know that it’s
01:48
important to think about change with
01:50
that positive mindset change is
01:52
something we need to welcome but there’s
01:54
also something about change that you
01:56
need to know is it a first-order change
01:58
or what we call a second-order change
02:01
now a first-order change is something
02:03
that really is either easier to manage
02:05
because it’s episodic and it’s smaller
02:09
when I think of a first-order change I
02:11
think of a slight change in a schedule
02:13
or
02:14
something that we really can just get
02:16
through and get done but when I think of
02:18
a second order change I think of
02:20
something transformational in larger
02:22
scale and there’s no doubt it’s a lot
02:25
more difficult to really think about how
02:27
not just to manage transformational
02:30
change but about how to lead our
02:32
organizations through those change so
02:35
we’ve talked a little bit about two
02:36
things we’ve talked about how we view
02:38
change and we’ve talked about our role
02:42
as a leader not just to manage change
02:43
but to lead through it I want to close
02:46
with three tips that I think are really
02:48
important for you to think about as you
02:51
think about how you can be better as a
02:52
leader of change in your organizations
02:55
well the first one is attitude think
02:59
about your attitude about change is it
03:02
something that you are just trying to
03:04
get through or how are you relishing
03:06
that change in welcoming it and sharing
03:09
that perception with the people you
03:10
serve your attitude of change is going
03:14
to trickle through your organization
03:15
very very pronouncedly
03:17
so think about your attitude about the
03:20
change is it something you’re just
03:22
trying to get through or is it something
03:24
you are welcoming with open arms because
03:26
you know that this transformation in
03:28
your organization will be better in the
03:30
end so attitude is first the second
03:34
thing is be really aware of the change
03:37
be aware of trends think about what are
03:40
those changes that are out there that we
03:42
really need to think about harnessing we
03:45
can’t change everything in our
03:47
organizations so as leaders it’s up to
03:50
us to be aware of what’s out there for
03:52
us to change and do and more importantly
03:54
what shouldn’t we do so it starts with
03:58
attitude but then you have to be aware
04:00
what are the most important changes that
04:03
we need to consider as leaders in our
04:05
organization so attitude and be aware of
04:09
the potential changes that’s a and B C
04:13
to me is the biggest mindset that you
04:15
need to think about if you are truly
04:16
going to lead through change and it’s
04:19
connecting and fueling your people and
04:21
here’s what I mean by that when I was
04:24
that new leader that was really reacting
04:26
to change
04:28
I thought it was all on my shoulders as
04:29
a leader to manage that but as I got
04:32
better as a leader I learned that wow we
04:35
need to all do this together this change
04:38
is something we are working on together
04:40
and so when I connected with the people
04:43
I work with and the people that really
04:45
are going to be impacted by the change
04:46
and got their views and really help them
04:49
fuel what our path should be that change
04:52
was a heck of a lot easier so the a B
04:56
and C of change management
04:59
oh no let’s be clear change leadership
05:01
is all about checking your attitude
05:04
about change being aware of what that
05:08
change is and what ones you should
05:11
pursue and what ones you shouldn’t and
05:13
then most importantly don’t put it all
05:16
in your shoulders
05:17
connect with the people in your
05:19
organization and those who will be
05:21
served by the change harness their help
05:24
in leveraging the change that’s how you
05:26
lead through change
05:35
you
