I’m Robin Largue and I am a coach with
00:04
Studer Education, I have the great pleasure
00:07
to work with leaders across our country
00:09
each and every day and I’m just going to
00:12
talk just a little bit about this thing
00:14
called urgency most of you have read or
00:18
read about John Kotter’s work on a sense
00:21
of urgency and it’s one of those
00:24
components of change that’s critical if
00:27
we truly are going to move our
00:29
organization to change and to perform in
00:32
a different way each day so urgency has
00:37
to be communicated and it’s communicated
00:39
by the executive leader and the
00:41
executive team and the extent of that
00:45
communication has to be consistent there
00:48
the message is consistent and it has to
00:51
be timely and focused on the audience
00:53
but that communication of urgency runs
00:57
throughout the organization I think
01:00
sometimes when we use the word urgency
01:03
we give it a certain definition that is
01:05
about crisis or some intensity but
01:09
really urgency says we are looking out
01:13
at the trends and the forecasts in our
01:16
profession we see things on the horizon
01:19
that we need to pay attention to we need
01:22
to see some folks performing at very
01:24
high levels in our work and we need to
01:27
look to them for best practices that we
01:30
can use or tweak to fit us so that sense
01:34
of urgency is around what’s going to
01:36
make us better how are we going to be
01:39
able to perform at higher levels and how
01:42
are we going to be able to fulfill our
01:44
mission in a much more significant way
01:47
and really have great impact that’s
01:50
going to be positive and so
01:53
communicating that sense of urgency to
01:55
our team is essential it doesn’t stop it
02:00
continues throughout our existence as an
02:03
organization and as a team urgency has
02:08
to be there in order for us to have
02:11
movement one of my colleagues Joann
02:14
Starr
02:14
he always says change is progress people
02:19
don’t like to change but they do want to
02:22
progress so as leaders I think it’s
02:25
important for us to apply this idea of
02:28
communicating urgency so as you go about
02:33
your day think about what’s that change
02:36
that you believe is really critical for
02:39
your team to move forward or for your
02:42
organization to move forward how are you
02:45
going to communicate that sense of
02:47
urgency what is the urgency what’s that
02:51
key point that you know and you need to
02:55
communicate so that everyone else has
02:57
your same sense of urgency so go out
03:01
there try it
03:02
think about your communication think
03:05
about how you’ll communicate and who
03:07
you’re communicating with and
03:09
communicate that sense of urgency to
03:13
achieve the impact you want to achieve
