There is much written about the importance of setting goals to measure progress and to be able to communicate in very real ways the accomplishments of our teams and organizations. Without setting goals based on priorities, we have no direction and our work seems chaotic. Goals help us communicate our purpose, the importance of the work we do, and answer the question, “Why are we doing this?” SMART goals clearly illuminate the path to progress, change, and improvement. SMART goals also create transparency. When communicated, SMART goals are easily understood and a clear line to the expected outcome is visible.
