People want to feel connected to something bigger than themselves. Taking time to celebrate steps of progress along the way builds that connection and momentum to keep the team going. In this video, Dr. Pat Greco explains how celebrating results helps teams focus on what matters most and connects them to purpose.

Consider your own practices.

  • Do you celebrate results in a way that motivates the team to push forward?
00:01
hi I’m Pat Greco I’m the senior director
00:03
for thought leadership at Studer
00:05
education I had a 37-year career in
00:08
public education working as a
00:11
superintendent in a variety of different
00:13
roles results can be very big when we’re
00:16
taking a look at the organization you’re
00:19
gonna be aiming at things that might
00:21
take you a year to accomplish but when
00:23
you stop regularly and celebrate those
00:26
steps that are taking you toward those
00:28
big goals it builds momentum of the team
00:31
and they understand how their actions
00:33
relate to those bigger connections team
00:37
members get lost in the daily operations
00:40
of their work so when they hear this has
00:43
been really helpful
00:44
this action really helps us achieve
00:47
those big aims those big goals that
00:50
might be a ways out it builds momentum
00:53
and excitement staff members want to
00:56
feel connected to something bigger than
00:58
themselves and those regular statements
01:01
are affirming it actually builds that
01:04
sense of teamwork and it also builds
01:07
that celebration so that they understand
01:10
little pieces make a big difference we
01:13
think about a specific example we had a
01:16
Friday evening where we had a heavy
01:19
snowstorm that wasn’t expected we have a
01:22
team that’s really committed to service
01:24
excellence our night team at the high
01:28
school custodial team went out and hand
01:31
shoveled students cars out of the snow
01:33
because we had six inches of snow that
01:35
came within two hours that wasn’t
01:37
expected in that time period those staff
01:40
members didn’t have to do that and the
01:43
students weren’t expecting that level of
01:46
care but that entire team was out in
01:49
that parking lot to make sure the
01:50
students were safe the kids were able to
01:53
get home properly and we actually took a
01:57
moment to on that Monday morning send
02:00
that thank you out to the entire high
02:01
school team on earth at night custodial
02:04
team a lot of times they don’t get seen
02:06
during the course of that eight-hour day
02:08
but those thank yous that were coming up
02:10
via email and those shoutouts from that
02:13
full team made them feel
02:15
did it also reconnected to that direct
02:17
purpose of services everything and
02:20
everyone’s part of that journey and our
02:22
students ultimately are why we’re here
02:25
and and their small actions made a
02:28
significant difference so that quick
02:31
thank you via email went viral across
02:34
that team everyone was chiming in does
02:37
it take a few more minutes to open those
02:39
emails absolutely but the energy it
02:41
built for that team was significant
